“16 INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS VERSUS FAMOUS SONG LYRICS”

It’s come around again all you music and type lovers! Welcome to LYRICS AND TYPE: VERSE 2 -
another international typographic screenprint exhibition from the creator of the award-winning
arts culture publication WOODEN TOY QUARTERLY (AUS) with support from the good folks
at VNA MAGAZINE (UK).

Following on from the success of the LYRICS AND TYPE: VERSE 1 zine project at Gorker Gallery
(Oct 2009), comes the exciting second instalment in the series of LYRICS AND TYPE projects at
London’s East Gallery. Combined with an all new formula and a ‘bass dropping’ array of artists,
LYRICS AND TYPE: VERSE 2 aims to feature interpretations of both famous, past and present song
lyrics by 16 leading international typographers, designers, artists and illustrators.

Each of the 16 selected artists have been carefully invited by Wooden Toy and VNA Magazine to
respond to a project brief and discuss with the public through its exhibition on the importance
of music ‘versus’ influence and personal inspiration.

Practicing my hand at some digital painting; in the middle of a series of monster portraits of my flatmates and just spent this sunday evening making this little ratbag.

New logo design for ‘Funktrap’.

I was after a tattoo/gothic feel and decided to hand draw the type and finish it as a vector.

Here is my original idea in a similar format but I decided on several changes (as above) to increase legibility. Found it difficult to get the balance and structure consistent, flowing and decorative without losing the legibility of the letters themselves; one of the many difficulties I find with hand drawn type.

Here are some stills from the animation music video for The Magic Lantern’s ‘Somebody Told Me’.

This was my third time animating and my first ever time using After Effects so was a very difficult process against a very short deadline! The first version of the animation is online now but I hope to rectify several mistakes before releasing the official version (we had to meet a uni deadline so we were very rushed).

Working as a group of six and we had lots of ideas and different styles merging together with some Paul Kidby and ‘The Little Prince’ references thrown in.

Worked with a fine group of other young illustrators- check out our future work as part of GLASS: Gotlib, Liu and Schwarz, Sheehan.

…Quite a mouthful and not very catchy… or inviting, but that’s exactly what this is, an invitation for you (the viewers of SickManSick) to come down for the opening night of my year’s photography exhibition which is being held at my university on 15th December 09.

All the visuals are nearly done, just a long weekend now of piecing it all together and making it come to life!

Haute is the alias of Patrick Johnson, a Leeds Graphic Design student from Birmingham. He often creates photographic scenarios that explore personal interests ranging from forests and fiction to Turkish traditions. In the first issue of ‘Cache’; a printed blog Patrick has in the works to house anything he’s working on or interested in, including writing and hopefully featuring other artists and designers in the future.

“I’m finding myself stuck between titles at the moment – Graphic Designer because essentially I love working with type, I want to communicate and anything I do will almost always end up in a printed form of some kind, but on the other hand I’m also a stylist and illustrator, I suppose because of the really personal nature of my work, style as well as subject.

I’m working on a number of final year University projects at the moment, including a large format book documenting the history of our new building as well as Cache. I work a lot with my friend Andy Callahan (www.andycallahan.co.uk) and we have a sort of collaborative-portfolio/working-partnership called Mount Milk  (www.mountmilk.co.uk) which we’re hoping to launch properly in the New Year. I’m also hoping to do some work with a small Record Label in California in the near future but that’ll only happen when it happens!

Here are a few visual ideas for an animation I am working on at the moment.

They are some quickly knocked-up collages of old life magazine images and a few other random sources.

We’ve agreed on the look and storyboard for the animation (mix of hand-drawn and collage) which isn’t anything like these images but I thought I would post the ideas anyway.

We have just over a week to complete the piece! Gonna be a hectic week…
