We all love a mince pie or five. I haven’t actually met anyone who doesn’t like those festive pastries of joy. But the Christmas period is all about sharing and trying new things, and as such, I’d like to share with you 5 unusual festive treats from around the word. If you keep an eye out, you may even find a few of these at your local German market this season.

Feuerzangenbowle

Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but it certainly goes down the throat nice and smooth. Feuerzangenbowle is a traditional German alcoholic drink prepared by setting a rum-soaked sugarloaf on fire until it caramelises and drips into mulled wine. For some the ceremony is more important than the drink itself, celebrating the gathering of friends …and what better way to do that than setting fire to some sugar and enjoying some wine?

Schmalzkuchen

These lemon and vanilla flavoured balls of dough, topped with a sprinkling of icing sugar, make a perfect snack whilst wandering through the German Christmas markets. They’re similar to the Spanish doughnut ‘Churro‘, however, being made with Goose fat makes them that bit tastier. For that ‘melt-in-the-mouth’ winter warming experience, it’s highly recommended to try these fresh from the oven.

Hallaca

From Venezuela, Hallaca are parcels made from a mixture of beef, pork, chicken, raisins, capers, and olives wrapped in cornmeal dough, then folded within plantain leaves. They’re then tied with string and usually steamed.

They can also be frozen for many months without losing their flavour, so perhaps you can save a few for spring to bring back those nostalgic memories of the time you pushed the boat out a little at Christmas.

Maple Taffy

If, like me, you think that calories don’t count at Christmas then you have to try this next Canadian treat!

Maple sap is boiled past the point in which it turns to Maple syrup, it is then poured onto fresh snow and lifted with a wooden stick. This delicious snack is often served with doughnuts, pickles and coffee.

Palm Wine

Palm wine is a tipple of many African and Asian countries, but the Nigerians especially like ‘oguro’, as it’s known locally, on Christmas Eve. It is made from the sap of palm trees, and produces a pungent, sweet drink that’s about 4% alcohol. Whole communities come together to to celebrate with each other whilst enjoying Palm wine, which is what this period is all about.

Bonus fact: The Japanese go to KFC for their Christmas meal.

Whilst the food is not unusual in itself, the habit of eating it at Christmas certainly is! Thanks to a massive marketing effort, the Japanese flock to KFC during Christmas. Some waiting times at restaurants are reportedly over two hours long!

Turkish/Canadian Emre Amasyali has put together a fantastic hour and a half of twisted techno and deep house. A bunch of us got together one evening to record the mix, giving it much more of a live feel. We all had a great night… some of us more than others. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Emre is a fellow resident DJ at the Eclectric night in Oxford and a sociology Masters student at the University of Oxford.

Well, here we go. The first in our new mix series: SickManSick 01.

I’m responsible for the first one. It’s a 90 minute jam of seriously slow grooves. It started off as a bit of an experiment: playing tunes 10-15 bpm slower than their original tempo. I loved the sexiness of 115 bpm so much I started searching out slower house beats (or at least ones that work well at 115). There are some absolutely amazing songs in there. Really some of my favourite songs of all time.

The mix also forms a response to the Chill Mix put together by my RAW CUTS radio show co-host James. He asked me to record a mix that would provide a different perspective on what constitutes a ‘chill mix’. And here it is:

In my first post as Music Editor for SickManSick I thought I would introduce you to one of my favourite music blogs. In doing so, I am trying to bring together the obvious design focus of SickManSick with the music content that I will be bringing to the site.

The Wire magazine is a fantastic source of high quality alternative music journalism. The team also runs a Tumblog called Sleeves Received which focusses on beautiful packaging for (often) equally beautiful music.

Félicia Atkinson’s new release The Owls is truly wonderful. It comes in a lined wooden box as a limited edition of fifty tapes. I’m a sucker for this sort of thing, so snapped it up immediately. So much care has gone into the packaging design, it is a piece of art in itself. And then there’s the music: ineffable, luscious ambient soundscapes that you can get lost in.

The best bit? Félicia has released The Owls as a free download on her Bandcamp for everyone to enjoy.

thewiremagazine.tumblr.com

Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Rhianna, Cheryl Cole, Muse, Ricky Gervais …I could go on.

His work has been published on the front of many, many magazine covers from all around the world, and if you don’t think that you’ve seen his images… you’re probably wrong. You can see his iconic work at johnwrightphoto.com

I caught up with John at his studio in Hoxton to ask him a few questions about his work.

——

Thank so much for talking with us Yusuke, could you tell SickManSick briefly about the type of work that you do?

Many of my works are based on children, because children have had the most impact on me in my life.

Congratulations on your current exhibition at the ‘Motala Konsthall’, please could you tell us a bit about the work you are showing?

In my paintings, I portrayed dreams from my childhood, my memories and wondering about how the world would change and showed them at my current exhibition at Motala Konsthallen. You can see my short film there as well.

You’ve mastered a variety of creative endeavors during your career. I know of your passion for drawing and I really admire the diversity within your studio and personal illustration work and also in particular how the energy is translated into your animation work.

Does this type of transition feel natural and what difficulties did you discover in this kind of process?

Through my long career as an illustrator, I have had contact with various kinds of people from different creative areas, which influenced my style of work. I was affected by how musicians, designers and dancers around me felt and saw things. I think that these various influences are reflected in my work.

We’d love to see your work here in London in the future, Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us, we wish you all the very best,

Thank you Yusuke!

Thank you so much to Hitomi Sato for doing a great job with the translation work.

Please check out more of Yusuke’s work at www.yusuke.nagano.nu and you can also purchase a selection of his illustration work at www.then.se

My name is Francisca Veloso and I’m a designer.
I’m interested in investigating how design can work with other subjects and vice-versa.
Social innovation, anthropology, maps and collaboration are themes I already worked with.

I graduated this summer from London College of Communication, BA Graphic Product Innovation,
Now I find myself in Lisbon, where I’m from and working in Interbrand as a designer.

—

My first post is going to be about one of my final major projects I did for university - Collaboration Project.

It’s aim is to get people together and help them follow a process for a multi-disciplinary project, with people from different knowledge backgrounds.

The Collaboration Roll’s objective is to lead participants to rethink their brief, generate their own findings, get as many ideas as they can and other tasks which should follow the group until the very end of any project. It was designed to be shifted sideways to unravel in bits, it can be placed on the floor or a low table and it’s tone of voice is as friendly as a kid’s drawing table – inspired by Tim’s Brown TED Talk On Creativity and play. Why? So that you are encouraged to use lot’s of post-it’s, big markers pens, sketches and have no fear of experimenting, just like children. Finally, it promotes everyone’s involvement, by having the writing placed in four to six different directions, so that people feel that it’s their turn to read a part of it out-loud.

With this project I’ve learnt how tools and processes can be borrowed from one subject to the next, and reused in other contexts if adequate. After my research, which included interviewing people with different backgrounds about their tools and methods (a nurse, a copywriter, a fashion designer and a film maker + a few of my design colleges), my main question became:

How can the design process – out of the design context and language – help us work collaboratively?
This was how this project was born.
